If you walk the trails at Mashomack Preserve back to the meadows you cannot miss the bluebird boxes. There are 52 nesting boxes throughout the preserve in an effort to bring back the species that was nearly wiped out by the 1970s.
Since it started in 2001, the nesting boxes at Mashomack have contributed more than 480 bluebird fledgings to the recovery of the birds on the East End. Tree swallows will also nest in the boxes, resulting in 1157 fledgings.
At Mashomack, the conservation project targeting the recovery of the Eastern Bluebird and other cavity-nesting birds involves volunteers checking the boxes weekly, seeing to box maintenance and recording the progress of the birds in the box, from nest building to fledging.
