On Saturday, August 16, LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton will host “LongHouse Landscape Legends — Modernist Landscapes,” a daylong celebration of modernist garden design. The annual event, known for blending scholarship with sensory experience, invites visitors into a world where architecture meets landscape, with talks, garden walks, and a shared lunch amid the lush grounds of the iconic modernist estate.
This year’s theme, “Modernist Landscapes: Visionaries and Their Gardens,” explores how 20th-century designers integrated gardens into their broader artistic visions. Barry Bergdoll, the Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History at Columbia University, will delve into the garden philosophies of Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. William Whitaker, curator at the University of Pennsylvania’s Weitzman School of Design, will spotlight the life and work of Harriet Pattison, known for her collaborations with architect Louis Kahn. Caleb Smith of Yale University rounds out the lineup with a talk on Russell Page’s distinctive mix of classical and modernist influences.
The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at LongHouse Reserve, 133 Hands Creek Road. Tickets and additional information are available at longhouse.org.
