The scent of buttery pastry and savory herbs greets you the moment you step inside NoFo Pot Pies Country Market in Mattituck. The cozy space feels like a slice of comfort itself — shelves lined with local goodies, a case filled with golden pies ready to take home, and the unmistakable promise of something warm for dinner.
It’s the season for hearty, oven-baked meals, and for many Long Islanders, that means a NoFo pot pie.
For nearly two decades, the Cooperage Inn in Baiting Hollow has perfected its beloved chicken pot pie — a flaky, bubbling staple that drew regulars from across the East End. When the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered dining rooms, the Inn found a way to keep the comfort coming. From a back pick-up window, they began selling their pies frozen, ready to heat at home.
Fast forward four years, and that pivot has grown into a thriving business all its own. The team behind the Inn expanded east, opening a dedicated shop for their famed pies — the kind, said Manager and Vice President of Operations Scott Hopkins, “you can just pop into the oven.”
“They’re great for a quick family dinner,” he added.
And so, NoFo Pot Pies Country Market, at 11160 Main Road, was born.
Inside, the market offers both hot and cold pies, all freshly baked at the Cooperage Inn and delivered daily — not only to Mattituck, but to nearly 20 other markets and farm stands across Long Island.
The menu changes with the season but features about 10 savory varieties: the classic chicken, short rib, and turkey pies (each available in multiple sizes), plus vegetarian, jambalaya, British meat pie, shepherd’s pie, chicken marsala, and even corned beef — a favorite come St. Patrick’s Day.
“In addition to all the pies, we offer fresh dessert pies and a line of prepared meals that we make at the Cooperage Inn,” Hopkins said. “They’re easy to pop in the microwave or air fryer.”
Each pot pie is handmade with quality, hormone-free meat and a light puff pastry top — no bottom crust, just extra filling.
“When we can, we use local vegetables,” Hopkins said. “Everything is from scratch. I think that’s what makes them the best.”
Of course, no visit is complete without dessert. The market’s sweet lineup includes key lime, coconut, cappuccino mousse chocolate cake, apple-pear puff, chocolate cream, and carrot cake, among other seasonal treats. The market has also grown to feature local products — gourmet cheeses, pastas, sauces, cookies, beverages, and salads.
“The coconut cream is a big seller,” Hopkins said. “And they’re all made in-house, too.”
During the holidays, special offerings like pumpkin cream and peach strawberry cream pies make their debut — festive, irresistible and perfectly at home on a holiday table.
“I’ve had my share of pies,” Hopkins said with a laugh. “And I think we definitely produce one of the best.”
