Here's a chance to own a slice of local cultural history in this cottage replete with charm.

Set on .34 acre on Ochre Lane in Southampton's fabled Art Village, this 2,277-square-foot cottage is for sale for the first time with a $1.25 million ask. It's one of the few original homes built for students of the famous American portrait, figure and still-life painter William Merritt Chase, who taught the summer arts colony in the early 20th century. And it's had only two sets of owners in its long history.

Nicknamed Greencote," this shingled cottage has exposed beams and an open first floor plan with two fireplaces, a parlor and a separate dining room. A winding staircase leads to four bedrooms and three baths, each with freestanding tubs.

The Art Village is made up of a cluster of properties, some with multiple dwellings. It was originally the site of the Shinnecock Summer School of Art headed up by Mr. Chase, and it attracted a well-to-do and creative crowd. It operated for 11 years, from 1891 to 1902, and was the first major art school of its kind in the United States, offering “en plein air” painting instruction. The school was established by Janet Ralston Chase Hoyt, a real estate investor, philanthropist and artist, and the neighboring parcels were purchased by wealthy supporters.

Listed exclusively with Lylla Carter with Saunders, this arts and crafts home is on the lower end of the houses in this unofficial village that have dabbled with the market over the last few years—one was put up for sale last winter for $6.2 million, while another was picked up last year for $3.5 million. Most notably, fashion designer Kate Spade sold her Art Village home for $4.8 million in December 2011.
