Before diving into a home project that requires digging—such as planting a tree or building a deck—call 811 to request a free mark-out to avoid hitting underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables.
“Underground electric, gas, communications and water lines are everywhere, even on private property,” according to a press release from energy company PSEG.
A contractor, excavator or do-it-yourself homeowner who does not know where these lines are could easily damage them. Aside from the potential for injury, disrupting these utility services could also result in expensive delays, repairs and fines, and environmental or property damage.
Homeowners are encouraged to call 811 at least four business days before each job. They will be connected to the New York one-call center, which collects information about a digging project and sends utility workers to place markers where utility lines are buried, free of charge. Various colors are used when marking lines, and homeowners are encouraged to learn what each color represents. They are also asked to dig only by hand within 2 feet of marked lines.
Calling before digging is “more than a good idea—it’s the law,” PSEG reminded in its release. For more information, visit http://newyork-811.com.
