The Sag Harbor home that was built for one of the village’s earliest newspaper publishers is on the market for $3.2 million.

The Hunt-Johnson home at 207 Madison Street dates back to 1841. It’s original owner was Henry Wentworth Hunt who founded The Corrector, which later became known as The Sag Harbor Correcter. The newspaper later merged with The Sag Harbor News and, still later, was bought by The Sag Harbor Express.

According to Sotheby’s International Realty, the home hosted three generations of Hunts and Johnsons before it was sold in 1951. From then until 1967, the owners were Joe Petrocik and Myron Clemente, who were great friends with Truman Capote. They were gifted the late writer’s 1968 red mustang convertible, and it still resides in the property’s garage with the original “CAPOTE” license plate.

The house in the classical revival architectural style and has a porch with Doric columns supporting a Greek-style cornice that extends to cover the entire facade.

In the living room, dining area and front parlor, the ceilings are 9 feet tall, and the original wide-plank cherry floors are intact throughout the home. There are fireplaces in the front parlor and the large living room.

Rounding out the first floor are a screened-in porch a dine-in-kitchen and full bathroom.

The second floor hosts three large bedrooms, two with fireplaces, a full bathroom and office. The full basement has 7-foot ceilings.

The 0.37-acre property has mature trees and a free-form pond. A glass atrium with a mahogany deck overlooking the pond has a sitting room, an outdoor shower, and a bathroom with a soaking tub.

Pamela Walsh of Sotheby’s International Realty has the listing.
