The landmark Sagaponack General Store building on Sagg Main Street is listed for sale for the first time in more than a century, asking $4 million.
The General Store was built in 1878 and originally called Chamberlain Bros., according to the listing. It has been owned continuously by the Hildreth/Thayer family since 1898.
Half the building is the longtime home of the Sagaponack Post Office for ZIP code 11962, which, according to PropertyClub, is the third most expensive ZIP code in the United States, with a median home sales price of $3.8 million.
Richard and Karen Thayer ran the Sagg General Store until 2016, when Pierre Weber of Bridgehampton restaurant Pierre’s took over the space and opened Pierre’s Market.
Back in 1975, when The New York Times published an article titled “Nostalgia Is a Staple at Sagaponack General Store,” the owners were Mary and Merrell T. Hildreth. Mr. Hildreth also served as the postmaster at the time, according to the article, which noted that the store’s facade was featured in several advertisement and fashion photo shoots without the owners’ permission.
Brown Harris Stevens has the listing for 542 Sagg Main Street, also referred to as 542 Sagaponack Main Street.
