The Village of Westhampton Beach will be able to create a walkway from Main Street to a new park on Glovers Lane now that the Southampton Town Board has voted to buy the connecting parcel using Community Preservation Fund money.
The town agreed to buy the 0.34-acre property for $400,000 following a brief public hearing on Tuesday.
According to Mary Wilson, the town’s Community Preservation Fund manager, the property is being purchased from Beaver Lake Development Corp. and will be applied to the Village and Hamlet Greens, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Target preservation area.
Westhampton Beach Village will be held responsible for maintaining the property. According to Village Mayor Maria Moore, who was the only person to speak at the public hearing, the land will be used to connect Main Street to the long-discussed Glover Park, which is currently under construction. The land is contiguous to the park and the Westhampton Beach Chamber of Commerce building.
“We would really appreciate having this property added to the village CPF, because it is perfect,” Ms. Moore said. “It is right on Main Street and provides a path through to our Chamber of Commerce and the park we are developing.”
Volunteers will once again comb Southampton Town beaches to clean up garbage and debris before the summer season.
This year, the event is scheduled for April 30 and May 1. Southampton Town is looking for volunteers to participate in the event. They can register online at Southamptontownny.gov.
Last year, 755 volunteers removed over 26.5 tons of litter and debris from the town’s parks and beaches. All told, 2.5 tons of metal was sorted for recycling, according to a press release issued on Tuesday afternoon.
The town will provide garbage bags, pick-up sticks and disposal passes for the four transfer stations, which can be picked up ahead of time. More information can be found online.
