Sometimes us plebes think living in the Hamptons is kind of funny. Not haha funny. More like, “Huh, I can’t afford to live out here. That’s funny. Think I’ll go drink now.” We decided to see if it’s really that bad out there and went hunting for some reasonably priced year-round rentals for all the single peeps out there. Lo and behold, the landscape is, indeed, quite dismal. So, then we drank some more, and went back to work, finally finding a very select few that just about pass muster. If you ever wanted to try tiny house living, these are some good places to test drive that concept and see if you’ve got the chops.

1. Quiogue Cottage, $30,000 per year

We’ll start with the most expensive of the lot. This three bedroom, one bath cottage has a renovated kitchen and is undeniably adorable. It’s located behind the owner’s main house and has its own little porch (with that wonderful red umbrella!). At 800 square feet, the price is a bit steep for the space, but it’s nothing if not charming. And the owner will even provide new furniture with bed sizes to suit the tenant, according to the listing. Now, do you know where Quiogue is?

2. Sag Harbor, $25,000 per year

This one bedroom, one bath apartment is connected to a house (containing other people) but has its own private entrance. There is a gas stove and a washer-dryer and it’s situated on the cove with waterfront views, which is pretty cool. There’s also shared use of a swimming pool and hot tub. There’s even docking available for boating, kayaking and canoeing—although our inner negative Nancy might argue that if you’re renting an apartment within a house, you probably can’t afford a boat. Just sayin’.

3. Bridgehampton, $24,000 per year

This petite cottage is growing on us. Maybe it’s the photo of summer greenery while the streets outside are actually running with brown slush. Still, we like that there’s three bedrooms, two baths, and a finished basement. That’s a lot of bang for your buck. It’s also a tad larger, at 900 square feet, although that’s still pretty intimate. Eh, whatever, singles don’t need much space. Just don’t date anyone with any long-term potential.

4. Amagansett Studio, $18,000 per year

In real estate-speak, the word “cute” means “small” and it often leads to narrowing eyes. But in actuality, cute means “charming,” “delightful,” “precious.” We’d like to bring that word back, starting today. This CUTE one room studio is beautifully designed, with lots of modern touches. It also happens to be quite small. Like, 220 square feet small. There’s a pull-out sofa—for you to sleep on every night—as well as one bath, a washer-dryer and a flat screen TV on the wall. And that’s all, folks.

5. Southampton Studio, $20,000 per year

This one bed, one bath studio is downright elegant. It’s also incrementally larger than the last, boasting 325 square feet. The owners appear to do a nice job of making it look (and one can only hope, feel) spacious. We like the modern furniture and accoutrement (see, it’s even making our vocab elegant!). And it’s strolling distance to all things interesting—the beach, shops and restaurants—according to the listing. Sounds like a nice location, so go get it, tiger. Carpe diem!
