A Coach’s Legacy

Carl Johnson is Bridgehampton basketball. It’s a bold statement, considering the school’s long, storied history, which includes nine state championships, second-most in New York history — all the more remarkable,... more

Kissed the Ring

Nick LaLota cynically ignored the fentanyl epidemic and its deadly consequences in Suffolk County by rejecting the bipartisan immigration bill and its robust fentanyl provisions. Instead, he kissed Donald Trump’s ring and rejected the bill and all its benefits when he could have helped to save the lives of young people in Suffolk County. What did Nick’s decision mean for Suffolk? More deaths from fentanyl. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Justice, in 2023, nearly 108,000 people died from drug overdoses, making it a leading cause of injury-related death in the United States. ... 14 Oct 2024 by Staff Writer

A Big Thank You

A big thank you from me and my family to the Bridgehampton Fire Department, Southampton Town Police, other law enforcement entities and all the bystanders for your valiant efforts on Friday, October 7, at Gibson Beach. It was not a good outcome, but your support made the situation bearable and reinforced my love for this community. Elizabeth Gilbert Sag Harbor by Staff Writer

Not Welcoming

Paid parking has its place, I suppose, when it comes to seeking revenue for infrastructure improvements like sidewalk repair, but Sag Harbor Village is going way, way too far with this seemingly handy solution to monetary problems [“Sag Harbor Village Board Hears Complaints About Paid Parking,” 27east.com, October 9]. Seeing the “Paid Parking” signs pop up behind Schiavoni’s IGA and at the “gas ball lot” is really so painfully out of character for us, and watching the creep of this solution take over the whole village, with annoying signage and extra steps to make a simple trip to run errands ... by Staff Writer

A Good Soldier

Congressman Nick LaLota was elected in the 2022 midterm election, after Lee Zeldin gave up his congressional seat in his losing bid for governor. Zeldin is gone but LaLota is continuing the Zeldin shell game of embracing Donald Trump and the MAGA agenda but pretending to be bipartisan at election time. LaLota brags about being one of the most bipartisan members of Congress, highlighting a letter he recently signed pledging to certify whoever wins the presidential election this year. But the truth is, he remains closely tied to Donald Trump, to his agenda and to his lies. He cannot have ... by Staff Writer

Keep Access Open

Cable access channels are not something that many people give much thought to. Local TV Inc. (LTV) understands that because we are your local public access station with two public access channels. We are realistic about who we are. Chances are, most people have come across LTV while scrolling through channels. As you quickly scroll by, you might see coverage of a town or village meeting or a locally produced television show. While government coverage is an important focus for LTV and other stations, some — including LTV — do more than that. We film, broadcast and archive community events, ... by Staff Writer

No Lecture

After watching the undemocratic process of inserting the unelected Kamala Harris to run for president, I and my friends see the real reason we will not vote for her. We don’t want to be subjected to listening to someone lecture at us about subjects she really doesn’t know a lot about. It would be like attending four years of a school and having the same unqualified teacher annoyingly try to teach the class a subject that the teacher doesn’t understand herself. Thank you, we will pass on her and be voting for former President Donald Trump. Rosalyn Jennings Southampton by Staff Writer

Difference Revealed

The recent League of Women Voters debate between two Assembly candidates [“Assembly Candidates Schiavoni, Kiely Featured in League Debate,” 27east.com, October 9] revealed the difference between a knowledgeable public servant, Tommy John Schiavoni, and an inexperienced Stephen Kiely. Among other issues, the debate addressed traffic, affordable housing and water quality. On the traffic issue, whereas Mr. Kiely spoke in generalities, decrying the Metropolitan Transit Authority — “The MTA is mismanaged, and we have to look at where the waste is” — Mr. Schiavoni demonstrated his capacity to deal with the world as it exists and still make progress in his ... by Staff Writer

Ban Religious Tyranny

I would like to respond to the coward who mailed my husband and me an anonymous letter accusing us of being heinous murderers of our grandchildren because we support reproductive freedom for our daughters. It is a sad commentary that people today feel entitled to spew ugly and patronizing rhetoric to their neighbors without taking the time to understand their stories. Let me assure you: We do not support killing our grandchildren. There have been a lot of ridiculous accusations thrown out by Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans that Democrats support abortion after a fetus is born. Once born, a ... by Staff Writer

Real Law and Order

Surveys continue to show that law and order is a top priority for Americans. Appropriately so. We all deserve to feel safe in our communities and have every right to expect our elected officials will work to ensure our safety and uphold the law. Republicans like Nick LaLota have claimed to be the law-and-order candidates — but if you look beyond the fear-mongering rhetoric, it’s clear that it is the Democratic challenger, John Avlon, who supports policies and programs that will improve safety and security in our community. Over the past several years, Republicans have demonstrated a consistent pattern of ... by Staff Writer

Keep Water Clean

Our coastal community relies on clean water. This Election Day, we have an opportunity to secure clean water for the future. Flip your ballot to find the clean water question and vote yes on Ballot Proposition 2. Here’s why I’m voting yes. We all depend on clean water. It affects our health, our local economy, and our environment. Unfortunately, nitrogen pollution has been contaminating our water — our beaches, bays, and harbors and our drinking water. Scientific research shows the main cause of the county’s poor water quality, harmful algal blooms, and damaged wildlife habitat is nitrogen pollution from outdated ... by Staff Writer
