Adhere to Code

We are writing in strong support of the Village of Sag Harbor in its efforts to uphold the landscaping regulations that preserve the character of our community.

The recent dispute involving the illegal removal of two enormous, healthy trees by the owner of 11 Meadowlark Lane, including one tree on village property [“Village, Property Owner Close to Settlement in Sag Harbor Tree Clearing Case,” 27east.com, June 4], highlights an important point: We all have a responsibility to follow the established village code.

Sag Harbor’s tree preservation code reflects years of community input and environmental considerations, and has been embraced by the residents and passed by the mayor and trustees. It balances private property rights with the shared values of our village.

When a property owner ignores the tree preservation code, it doesn’t just affect their lot; it affects the entire streetscape and beyond.

In the Meadowlark case, enforcement of the required re-vegetation plan sets precedent and affirms the village’s wish to protect and preserve its natural environment. Requesting a re-vegetation plan is not a big ask, and it is not about punitive measures. It is about the common good. It is about enforcing our code for the betterment of our village.

Currently, the property owner has resisted submitting a re-vegetation plan to remediate the damage done. The Justice Court has rightly sought such a plan, which would provide the village with the tools necessary for oversight and to fulfill the goals of the legislation.

The property owner’s suggested replacements to date do not meet those stated goals. Effective landscaping plans require input by arborists and landscape designers who promote the use of native species that are environmentally friendly and suitable for a property. Appropriate plans, when implemented, will begin to redress the loss of two magnificent, irreplaceable trees.

We live in one of the most beautiful areas on the East End. Adhering to our tree preservation code will help ensure it stays that way.
