Arthur Mario Cardone Of Sag Harbor Dies June 21

authorStaff Writer on Jun 28, 2022

Arthur Mario Cardone, a former French, English and Latin teacher at Pierson High School and long-time resident of Sag Harbor, died on June 21, 2022.

Arthur was born on January 8, 1944 to the late Secondo and Josephine Razzano Cardone on Fulton Street in East New York. Growing up a second-generation Italian immigrant, Arthur was earnest in his studies and discovered a love for languages and learning early in life. After graduating St. John’s Prep in NYC, he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Hunter College in NYC, then briefly attended Yale University before earning an advanced degree in French at Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier III.

Arthur’s father had often taken him and his brothers to the East End to fish, so when Arthur decided to apply for teaching jobs he said, “I’ll start in Montauk and land at the first place that hires me.” That turned out to be Sag Harbor in 1970. He enjoyed everything about Sag Harbor, especially his students and colleagues at Pierson about whom he spoke fondly and frequently. “Mr. Cardone” had a true calling to teach. Tough but fair in class, he was also active in the school and student life. In retirement, he delighted in visits with former students; those who chose teaching careers were especially dear to him. Many have reached out to remember him as one of their best teachers.

An avid reader with eclectic intellectual pursuits, Arthur was a treasure trove of information and an exceptional conversationalist; full of stories with a quick wit, he was happy to discuss almost any subject with anyone who would lend an ear. “Have you seen any good movies lately?” could easily meander into a lively discussion about Cold War politics, the Yankees, or the best way to make bread. Arthur spent his final five years in Sarasota, Florida near his son Andrew. He returned recently to his Catholic faith, and those closest to him believe God called him back home.

Mr. Cardone is survived by his children, Andrew, Sara, Rachel, Philip, and Mary; his brothers Albert and Joseph; and grandchildren Carina, Carson, Cayden, Roxanne, and Zadie. He was preceded in death by his brothers Fortunato (Fred) and Vincent.

The family thanks everyone for their kind words and wishes. A memorial service will be held in Sag Harbor in October; arrangements to be announced at a later date.
