Barry Lynwood Vaughn of Sag Harbor died at the East End Hospice Kanas Center on Quiogue January 24. He was 83.
Mr. Vaughn, born on January 15, 1938, was a third generation Sag Harbor resident who loved his home town deeply, his family said, noting that he proudly called it “God’s country.”
An avid boatsman, he enjoyed fishing and, when his boat couldn’t be in the water, he spent countless hours working on her wooden hull.
His law firm, Anderson, Maggipinto, Vaughn and O’Brien, sat proudly at 132 Main Street for decades. He was a graduate of the Stony Brook Prep School, Colgate University and Boston University School of Law.
Mr. Vaughn was active in the community beyond being a local attorney as a member of the Masons and Lions Club. His children fondly recalled helping him sell Christmas trees at the old windmill to raise money for the Lions Club.
He attended church regularly at The Old Whalers Presbyterian Church, where the Vaughn family has a pew. In the summer months, when he could get out on his boat earlier, he moved to the Methodist Church because they had earlier services. “Same God” he would say as they family motored under the Sag Harbor bridge to enjoy a summer day on the water, his family recalled.
He loved his wife, Joanne, who predeceased him, dearly and held his family above all else, his family said.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Clother H. Vaughn III. He is survived by his two sons, Mark Vaughn of Sag Harbor and Bruce Vaughn of Sonoma, California; daughter-in-law Kimberly; son-in-law William; sister-in-law Joyce; and two grandchildren, Taylor and Morgan; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was scheduled for January 27 at 11 a.m. at Old Whalers Church in Sag Harbor.
