Two key concepts that we must consider in our discussions of affordable housing in Sag Harbor Village are: accommodating families, present and future, and preserving our neighborhoods and their character.
The Potter project does not address either of these two aspects.
What we should be doing is using the housing fund to purchase existing “mid-century” homes, and offer them at an affordable price to local families. This is key to saving what’s left. Redwood is quickly becoming unrecognizable, as is Meadowlark. Speculators and developers are profiting at the expense of our “soul.”
These homes are disappearing at an alarming rate, and with every house that is demolished, a piece of our community character goes with it.
The houses being razed are in perfectly good condition and have “good bones.” I know — I live in one built in 1960. They are part of the kind of neighborhood you would want to raise your kids in.
The SANS coalition has recognized how important community preservation is. Let’s the rest of us act on this before we lose our families and our neighborhood character.
Thank you for your prescience and political will to accomplish this. The passage of the referendum will be your opportunity to act.
Otherwise, your board’s legacy will be one of loss.
