Dale Aldrich Edwards of Deland, Florida, and Sag Harbor died peacefully in Norwalk, Connecticut, on July 25, after a long illness. He was 92.

He was born in 1933 and raised in Sag Harbor. He attended Pierson High School and then Alfred University in upstate New York, earning a degree in business administration. He received a master’s degree in business management from New York University. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1954-1956.

He enjoyed a successful career in the defense industry. During the early years of his career, he worked at AT&T Western Electric Division, and Grumman Aerospace. He worked as a program manager for Hazeltine Corporation for 27 years on Long Island and in Reston, Virginia. He continued his career at Magnavox, relocating to Fort Wayne, Indiana, and ending his career as a Raytheon retiree.

After retirement, he settled in Deland, Florida, and maintained a summer residence in his hometown of Sag Harbor.

He was a friendly, kind and generous man, interested in the lives of all those that he met. He had a keen interest in the civic life of his community and in public education. While raising his family and building a career, he became an elected member of the East Meadow Board of Education, serving from 1965-1974 and 1975-1981, and serving as school board president for five years. He continued to serve his community during retirement as a volunteer at the Deland Public Library.

His interest in Edwards family genealogy naturally connected him to the mission of the Sag Harbor Historical Society, of which he was a member for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Alice Karen; his children, Susan Dale Edwards (Ian Ziskin), Daniel Vernon Edwards (Anne Marie), James McFarland (Ivette), Peter McFarland, and Carolyn MacLellan (Sean); his grandchildren, Christine McCarthy (Thomas), Tyler Ziskin (Amy Thomas), Jacqueline Edwards Hickling (William), Eric Ziskin (Kajsa Olsson), Elizabeth Edwards, Artur MacLellan (Laura), Matthew Ziskin, Charlotte Edwards, Kyle McFarland, Catherine Edwards, Jack MacLellan (Veronica), and Logan MacLellan; his eight great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Arden Edwards; nieces Astrid Edwards and Arden Blatter; as well as numerous relatives. He was predeceased by his parents, Olin Miller Edwards Jr. and Elizabeth Sands Edwards; and his siblings, Almira Holland, Olin Miller Edwards III and Cortland Edwards.

He will be laid to rest in Oakland Cemetery in Sag Harbor on August 16, with a celebration of his life to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to the Elizabeth S. Edwards Scholarship Fund of the Sag Harbor School District, 200 Jermain Avenue, Sag Harbor, NY 11963.

The Senior Surge

People often speak wistfully about young people being the future of this country. They certainly are — but let’s take a moment to recognize that the next few decades are actually going to belong to senior citizens. Which makes a group like Seniors Taking Action, founded by Mary Mulvihill of North Haven and Judy Loeb of East Hampton six years ago, even more impactful. Their small gathering of seniors is growing, in size and stature — it now has 1,400 members — and could well become an advocacy group that serves as a voice for those 65 and older. Estuaries Are a Bargain

Whichever side of the political aisle you sit on, there’s a reality in play in 2025: Government spending is going to be on the chopping block, and only the most compelling arguments are going to save individual investments. Why, then, does federal spending on estuaries seem so precarious? The argument is rock solid, the benefits are clear and demonstrable, and it seems unlikely that the dollars going to places like the Peconic Estuary are raising ire among voters. If this funding is at risk, nothing is sacred. U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was in Riverhead last week pledging to fight proposed ... by Editorial Board
