At a time full of strife and conflict, it’s nice to look around in the near distance and see comforting signs that disagreement doesn’t necessarily require disrespect. Conversations are taking... more

It's Immigration, Too

James Carville, a campaign advisor to Bill Clinton in the early 1990s, was the first to say it: “It’s the economy, stupid.” This truism about national elections holds water: While pundits talk about so many other issues at stake, the economy is usually the one that moves people the most when they cast a vote for president. There’s no reason to think 2024 will be any different. That said, there are several other important issues in that race this year, and they filter down to the 1st District race for the U.S. House of Representatives, where they take on even ... 2 Oct 2024 by Editorial Board

Don't Lose Faith

It is my hope that when you cast your votes for the upcoming election that you take into consideration the future of our democracy, our country and our lives. I hope, regardless of your party affiliation, that you vote for John Avlon in District 1’s congressional election. For the past six years, I have listened to the messages coming from the Republican Party. They have been divisive, hateful, racist, untruthful and tend to incite acts of violence. They are anti-education, anti-climate change initiatives, anti-immigration, anti-journalists and honest news reporting, anti-LGBTQ+, anti-gun-control legislation, against the separation of church and state, etc. ... 1 Oct 2024 by Staff Writer

Really Motivated

A note of thanks to the coward who stole the Harris/Walz signs in our neighborhood. This shameful violation really motivated me to get busy writing postcards, donating and canvassing for our Democrat candidates. It energized me more than ever to turn the page on extreme right-wing MAGA policies that strip women of their personal rights, deny climate change and promote disinformation with a daily fire hose of lies. If you’re eager to help elect honest candidates who will put us first and carry the country forward, and end the toxicity of the racist orange relic, visit John Avlon’s headquarters at ... by Staff Writer

A Team Sport

This isn’t a statement for or against, only for information not given. This is to question the latest “27Speaks” podcast with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. I can’t say I have heard her speak often. I wish she elaborated on the history of the 1972 Equal Rights Amendment. It had seven years to be ratified after it was passed by Congress. Thirty-eight states needed to sign on. Thirty-five did. Jimmy Carter extended the deadline for an additional three years, until June 30, 1982. No other state signed on until Nevada in 2017, Illinois in 2018, and, as she mentioned in the podcast, ... by Staff Writer

Clear Choice

We have experienced the chaos and lies from a first Donald Trump administration. I do not want to extend that experiment at the risk of international peril. For example, he has promised to “end the war in Ukraine in one day” — presumably by withdrawing American support and forcing Ukraine to surrender to Russia. Kamala Harris offers stability and integrity. That choice is clear in my mind. Regarding the congressional election, the choice is equally clear, because there is no guarantee that Harris will win the presidential election. The only defense against Trump’s “Project 2025” plan to remake our government ... by Staff Writer

Hollow Heart

In a recent Instagram post, Congressman Nick LaLota claimed that he stands for “a safe and more affordable Suffolk.” He is trying to make the case that he is a moderate, common-sense Republican. His change of heart is hollow and reeks of political expediency. LaLota has routinely pushed Donald Trump’s extreme MAGA agenda to slash Social Security, cut taxes for the wealthy, de-fund law enforcement, ban abortion nationwide, and play politics with immigration reform, contrary to public safety and affordability. A moderate, common-sense Republican would work to preserve our Social Security benefits. Yet LaLota supported harsh cuts of $718 billion ... by Staff Writer

Peeling Back the Layers

By its nature, a conversation imparts information, and, typically, the deeper it goes, the more you learn. That is the key thought behind a new project that begins this week, a podcast, “1st District Matters,” that’s a partnership between The Express News Group and WLIW-FM. Over the years, preparing voters for important elections has always been a challenge. Among the tools that come in handy are “meet the candidates” events, live and virtual debates, interviews with the candidates, news stories focused on the issues and the candidates’ respective positions, and endorsements based on in-depth sitdowns. This year, the race for ... 25 Sep 2024 by Editorial Board

A Rubber Stamp

If you walk down the memory lane of politics, in 2019, you will be reminded that Tommy John Schiavoni was a candidate for the New York State Senate seat held by moderate Republican Kenneth LaValle. Currently, the Southampton Town Democratic Committee is portraying Tommy John as a “common-sense” candidate. However, Tommy John showed no common sense when his campaign put out a mean-spirited letter attacking LaValle. To quote Tommy John, from Dan’s Papers, November 19, 2019: “I don’t plan on attacking him. I don’t believe in contentious elections.” Really? That letter was quickly retracted, but, of course, the negatives were ... 23 Sep 2024 by Staff Writer

It's About Mercy

Christians, as a whole, make up perhaps the largest voting demographic in the U.S., but they don’t tend to vote as a united bloc and, in fact, are a source of great division in our politics over the issues of abortion, gun control and immigration. I believe it is because we have not really taken to heart Jesus’s teaching when he quotes the prophet Hosea in saying, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice,” and we support politicians who lack this mindset. It has greatly contributed to this quagmire we are in as a country, where everyone has locked their mindset into ... by Staff Writer

Fighting for Us

As a resident who cares deeply about our local environment, I am grateful for Congressman Nick LaLota’s leadership in protecting Suffolk County’s natural resources and addressing climate change. As co-chairs of the Long Island Sound Caucus, Congressman LaLota (R-NY) and Congressman Joe Courtney (D-Connecticut) worked together to successfully pass a bill to reauthorize the Long Island Sound Program, securing vital funding for the Long Island Sound and the Peconic Estuary, ensuring these treasured waters are preserved for generations to come. LaLota has earned bipartisan support for his legislation to protect Plum Island, an irreplaceable environmental gem, and passed an amendment ... by Staff Writer
