It’s an old adage that when voters — or newspaper editorial boards — are evaluating incumbents and challengers for elected positions, the real decision amounts to a simple question: Should the incumbents be fired? Certainly, there are times when an elected official is doing such a poor job that he or she deserves to lose it. And other times when a challenger is so strong by comparison that it makes sense to unseat the incumbent and give the newcomer a chance. The two competitive village races are perfect examples: Each of the candidates is well-qualified to serve and could well ... 12 Jun 2024 by Editorial Board

Break the Lockstep

The verdict in the Hunter Biden gun possession case came less than two weeks after former President Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 charges in his New York hush money trial, where the jury determined he broke the law, many times over, by falsifying business records to cover up, amid his 2016 presidential bid, a sexual encounter he had with a porn star a decade earlier. Likewise, it is an example of equal justice under the law in the United States, but Trump is not accepting that and has called on the U.S. Supreme Court to annul the guilty ... by Staff Writer

Debt of Gratitude

I was stunned at the guilty verdict in the Donald Trump hush money trial. It was not that I believed he was innocent. No reasonable person believes that. No, it was because I didn’t believe he would get caught and face punishment for his actions. I realized I had become jaded. I had been witnessing Trump’s immoral and unethical behavior for over eight years now and saw how he continued to succeed and avoid accountability. Besides his conviction, on 34 counts, the trial revealed the putrid underbelly of his life, his associates and his business practices. While that was exposed ... 10 Jun 2024 by Staff Writer

Role in Revolution

Many thanks for bringing to light the efforts of the Sag Harbor Historical Museum to advance a deeper understanding of our village’s significant role in both heroism and suffering during the American Revolution, a central focus of the museum leading up to the celebration of the 250th anniversary in 2026. The Battle of Sag Harbor and its larger significance in the American conduct of the Revolution, the patriot military strategy adopted for Long Island Sound, and the parallels leading to the final victory at Yorktown four years later, have been an area of my personal interest and research for years. ... by Staff Writer

Slow It Down

As a resident of North Haven, I have been disturbed by the laxity of clear-cutting regulations and the construction of monster houses, both of which are changing the rural character and beauty of our community and, as a consequence, displacing our wildlife — the reasons so many of us have chosen to live here. Why are outside investors who have no cultural understanding of North Haven (and Sag Harbor), who have no concerns to preserve what we cherish about living here, who have no interest other than a quick, turnaround profit — approved to build these oversized-for-the-lot houses on spec? ... by Staff Writer

More of the Same?

I write this letter to endorse Barbara Roberts, candidate for mayor of North Haven at the upcoming election on June 18. For those who know me personally, or perhaps those who only know me from having read about my service as a North Haven trustee over the past four years, I hope you recognize my high standards for always striving to make good decisions and do what is best for the Village of North Haven. On Tuesday, when it comes time to cast my vote for mayor, I will choose Barbara. I feel it is important for North Haven to ... by Staff Writer

Zero Sum Thinking

“Sometimes we forget that public safety is a fundamental civil right.” This insightful observation was made by Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, John Avlon. Who could disagree? I won’t say that Avlon’s opponent Nancy Goroff does, but she has put herself in an untenable political position, when, at a 2020 protest rally, held a sign with this message: “Cost of Riot Gear for 1 Policeman Equals Cost of PPE (personal protective equipment) for 31 Nurses.” The wisdom of pitting police against nurses escapes me. Nancy will have to defend this, but as they say in my circles, ... by Staff Writer

Terrific Job

This letter is to support the reelection of our mayor, Chris Fiore. Chris has done a terrific job and deserves our support for a second term. Michael Daly North Haven by Staff Writer

Playing Victim

I honestly don’t understand why the Sag Harbor Express lets Carlos Sandoval write opinions. The recent “The Wife Beater” opinion [Vistas, June 4] is so full of vitriol and hate and presumption that he can’t be taken seriously. His latest analysis of a simple comment by a man who held the door for his disabled husband sent him down a dark path. The simple act of saying, “Of course always glad to help a fellow American, there ain’t many of us left,” sent him to judge his content by the way he was dressed. The fact that he was wearing ... by Staff Writer

Preserve Character

I support Barbara Roberts for North Haven mayor having witnessed her leadership skills and dedication to our community first hand. Barbara is devoted to preserving North Haven’s character of natural beauty and a certain wild feel, saving it from manicured overdevelopment, happening both to our neighborhoods and public lands. We bought in this bucolic community in the 1990s and have grown increasingly concerned that the traditional aesthetic of North Haven is not being preserved. Barbara has a vision that will call for a comprehensive plan and a collaborative approach to protect our environment, water quality and what is left of ... by Staff Writer
