The weather is trying to transition into the summer mode, but there is still a chill in the air. The east winds bring cooler temperatures. The west and southwest winds bring those warm temps, close to 80 degrees.
There are swimmers in the bay on a daily basis. It’s mid-May, and everything is growing. The flowers are blooming and the grass is growing. Remember that there are a lot of ticks around.
Fishing has really been exciting throughout the bays. Multiple species are caught on any given fishing trip.
The good porgy fishing did slow down last week. Numbers and size were off. Hopefully, it is just a lull in the action and will come back.
There are a lot of boats working Peconic Bay and Noyac Bay for the good weakfishing that exists. There are fish taking porgy baits on the drift. There are many boats using diamond jigs to take their fish. Hi/lo squid also works. Whatever method, the fishing is good. Fish up to 8 pounds have been caught. There were several weakfish that were bitten in half as some large bluefish are roaming the bays. Occasional large bluefish have been caught, up to 10 pounds.
There is some interest in fluke with that fishery just getting started. Reports have filtered in with a few shorts and legal fish being caught. The striped bass fishing has also been good. Many slot size fish are being taken with some oversized slot fish being released. The ferry slip is a good place to start on the troll.
Casters have been catching fish from the bay beaches and creek mouths. It will only get better as June approaches. Some blowfish are showing up. Numbers are being caught to the east.
Squid news has been quiet, but they should be around. Those large bluefish will have them looking for refuge.
Montauk has striped bass around the Lighthouse and some fish are being caught in the surf. Plum Gut and the Race have had some good bass fishing.
We have been blessed with excellent spring fishing. Take advantage of it before the bay waters warm up.
