What a difference a couple of weeks make weather-wise. We have finally gotten much needed rain. With a little sun, everything will be in super growth mode. It’s May, and the weatherman predicts warming weather will return this weekend.
It’s hard to know where to start on the fishing front. There is some good striped bass action in the bays and along the ocean beaches. Many are shorts, but slot fish are mixing in, too. Look for this fishery to really improve as May progresses.
West of Jessups, in the Peconics, porgies are biting with mixed sizes, from just keepers to fish up to 3 pounds. Many limits are being taken. Best limits are being caught if you anchor and chum heavy. Mixing in on the porgies are some weakfish and striped bass. Weakfishing will only get better.
Monday, May 1, was the opening of fluke season. Currently the size limit is 18.5 inches and four fish per day. Reports have been coming in that squid and fluke are being caught to the east, which means they will be here shortly.
Even though the weather doesn’t always cooperate, the codfish boats from Montauk have been finding fish from Montauk to Block Island. There are rumors of large bluefish in Shinnecock Bay. There are striped bass at Montauk.
There is nothing but great fishing news. The May full moon, also known as the “Flower Moon,” arrives this weekend, and that will bump up the fishing even more.
There should be some urgency to get your boat ready so you don’t miss out on this great spring fishing season. If you’re traveling to the north, boats from Massachusetts to Maine have had great haddock and pollock fishing. Some of the first rod and reel halibut have also been taken. As soon as the east winds pass, look for some good clamming tides.
