Joyce Chippindale of Palmyra, Virginia, and Sag Harbor died on February 2 at Monroe Health and Rehabilitation Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. She was 93.
Born on September 8, 1930, in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of Alfred Anderson and Emilie Jungwirth.
She was passionate about life, according to her family. She taught first grade, raised three sons, volunteered for countless causes, and fought tirelessly to protect and preserve nature.
She grew up in Jamaica, Queens. She and her sister were competitive and ran faster than the boys at Forrest Hills High School.
She married her husband, Henry Chippindale, in 1950, and they raised their three sons in Mineola and spent summers in Sag Harbor. She picked up windsurfing in her 50s and enjoyed the sport into her 80s.
She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the 1980s.
She retired with her husband to Palmyra in 1997, and continued to summer in Sag Harbor.
“We miss Joyce’s sparking smile,” her family said.
She was predeceased by her husband Henry Chippindale; and her son Glenn Chippindale. She is survived by her sons Bruce and Craig; and her grandchildren, Kjersti, Anders, Hunter and Eva. She also leaves behind her dog, Scooby Doo.
Memorial contributions should be made to a local animal shelter or environmental organization such as SPCA, WWF or National Audubon Society.
