We are still experiencing some scary weather.
Last week’s storm saw tides as high as when Sandy hit. There were heavy winds up to 60 mph in some places.
Let’s not forget days of rain. We all know about April showers, but we seem to be in a pattern of wind and rain every week, lasting for months. It could be worse — if we had snow like New England.
We are still waiting for the temperatures to improve. And what about the earthquake in New Jersey? Several folks felt the tremors and aftershocks on Long Island.
Fishermen continue to uncover and work on their boats, but no one seems in a rush to put them in the water.
Locally, the Montauk boats pursuing cod and blackfish have found dismal results. The blackfish season is now open. The spring season lasts the entire month of April. The limit is at 16 inches. The season closes by October.
Last weekend, the Viking Star only found a couple of cod for an all-day effort. Hopefully, when the ocean settles down, fishing will improve.
The New Hampshire boats are finding haddock, redfish and cusk when they are able to get out between the storm fronts. The local bays have bunkers here, and a few holdover striped bass have been caught. We need some sun and warmer temperatures to help us out.
New York State made the new rules for the 2024 fluke season. The season starts on May 4. From then until August 1, you can keep three fluke at 19 inches. From August 2 to October 15, the size increases to 19.5 inches, but still a three-fish limit. Anglers will be making some tough choices this fluke season.
Striped bass season opens April 15, with a one-fish limit between 28 and 31 inches, and porgy season starts May 1.
Osprey sightings have been multiplying daily, with most nests occupied. The birds are carrying fish either from fresh or saltwater.
Let’s hope everyone enjoyed a great solar eclipse experience!
