Nourishes the Spirit

I feel I must add my voice to all of those who have written and spoken about Canio’s and what it has meant to them [“Canio’s Books, Long a Sag Harbor Cultural Icon, Faces Uncertain Future as Lease Is Not Renewed,” 27east.com, March 20].

I first went to Canio’s while he was still presiding over this marvelous bookstore that reminded me so of the bookstores I had left behind in Greenwich Village: a bookstore actually run by someone who loved books and who loved people who loved books. I spent many happy hours at Canio’s looking over the wonderful and carefully curated selections.

When I learned that Canio would be turning the bookstore over to two women I did not know, my heart sank and I feared losing that East End treasure.

I was wrong. Canio’s has actually blossomed under the stewardship of Kathryn and Maryann. They have worked tirelessly to continue the tradition and have expanded it with Canio’s Cafe. It is a pleasure to spend time in the store, looking over the wonderful book selection, attending the lively talks, taking courses — everything that book lovers want.

I hope that some way can be found to keep Canio’s in Sag Harbor so it can continue to nourish the spirit of the town and its people.
