We are writing on behalf of Canio’s Books, a bookshop and cultural center that’s been part of our lives out here on the East End since the 1970s. I’m a poet and my wife a sculptor, and we value the original and generous presence of this special one-of-a-kind place ever since we can remember.
The poet David Ignatow first introduced me to it, and I’ve enjoyed the honor of reading there many times over the years, especially after the publication of a new poetry collection. My wife and I have attended many readings and art shows there, and we considered the owners, Maryann Calendrille and Kathryn Szoka, friends as well as colleagues in the art community out here.
Their store has always been a cultural oasis unlike any other, the kind that is truly irreplaceable and visionary. The dedicated work these artists have put into this store is appreciated by a large community, and their absence will be a great loss to this community.
We’re hoping they will find another location soon and with as little difficulty and disruption as possible.
Anything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated.
Philip Schultz and Monica Banks
