Peter V. Ramundo of Sag Habor died on December 30 at his winter home in Naples, Florida. He was 85.
Ramundo, the youngest of 14 children born to his parents, the late Sabatino and Josephine Ramundo, was born on August 15, 1937 in Suffern, New York, and lived most of his life in the Haverstraw, New York area until his retirement in 1994.
He and his wife, Mary Ellen (Fee), who died in 2008, owned homes in Sag Harbor, first on Harvard Road in the Redwood section of the village, and later on Dogwood Street in Noyac, since the 1970s. Upon their retirement, the Ramundos spent their summers in Sag Harbor and winters in Naples.
He was a member of St. Andrew’s Church and was also a member of Noyac Golf Club, where he served on the club’s Board of Governors.
A graduate of Haverstraw High School, he received a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University, where he majored in communication arts. From 1960 to 1969, he was employed as a newspaper reporter, night city editor, and assistant city editor for The Rockland County Journal-News.
In 1969, Ramundo embarked upon a political career which extended over two decades. He served as administrative assistant for the Town of Haverstraw, commissioner of the Haverstraw Joint Regional Sewerage Board, director of the Rockland County Real Property Tax Services and director of Tax Delinquent Properties for the County of Rockland.
Ramundo was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Rockland County Legislature, and was elected twice as a county legislator before retiring. He also served on the Rockland County Democratic Executive Committee and the New York State Democratic Committee.
In the business world, Ramundo was a real estate broker at Miller & Ramundo Real Estate in Stony Point, New York, a partner of T.J. McGowan Sons Funeral Home in Haverstraw, Nyack, and Congers, New York, and a partner in Parkway Mobile Homes, Inc., in Mt. Ivy.
Ramundo was very active in community affairs in North Rockland and Nyack. He was past chairman and member of the North Rockland Father and Son Athletic Association and a member of the Haverstraw Knights of Columbus and the Haverstraw and Naples Elks Clubs.
He served on the Board of Directors of the Rockland County Board of Realtors and the Rockland County Multiple Listing System, as well as the Nyack Hospital Board of Trustees. He was also a member of the Nyack Rotary Club and the Nyack Chamber of Commerce, serving on their Board of Directors.
Ramundo was active at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, New York, serving as chairman of the President’s Council and later as a member of the college’s Board of Trustees.
Ramundo first moved to Naples in 1994 and lived in Embassy Woods community (now Glen Eagle) and later moved to Naples Heritage Golf and Country Club in 1997.
Ramundo was very active at Naples Heritage, serving on its Board of Trustees for six years, serving as president for two years. He also was a member of the Naples Heritage Community Developments District’s Board of Supervisors, serving as its vice-chairman. He also was president and a member of the Abbey Homeowners Association in Naples Heritage.
He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Mary Ellen (Fee). He is survived by his son, Peter V Ramundo Jr. (Amy) of Naples; and his two daughters, Tracy Brosnan of Sag Harbor, and Jill Ramundo of Montauk; six grandchildren, Nicole and Jack Brosnan of New York City, and Gabriel, Peter, Hannah, and Michael Ramundo of Naples, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia D’Agostino of Bradenton, Florida; and his companion of 13 years, Lois Farber of Nyack.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by five brothers, John, Michael, Joseph, Thomas, and Sabatino (Sal) Ramundo; and seven sisters, Catherine Ryder, Theresea Felice, Mary Crow, Mary Ramundo, Christine Squillini, Josephine Marino, and Liberata Marino.
Visitation was held at the Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Andrews Church.
