The weather continues with above-normal temps, with a cold day or two thrown in every couple of weeks. For the most part, the only constant weather events are wind and rain.
It looks like it might be a windy spring. We almost made it to the end of February without any snow, but it happened on the last day of February. We got 2 or 3 inches of snow locally, followed by rain. The temps moderated after the snowfall, and the snow disappeared.
Last weekend, we were treated to some phenomenal high tides. The east winds and pending full moon put the tides 2 to 3 feet above normal. Roads were flooded and the Sag Harbor breakwater and docks were under water, a reminder that March can be a tough month.
Winter codfishing has been slow, as there aren’t many fishable days. Good reports have been coming from the Rhode Island boats. The last couple of trips reported plenty of limits. To the west, the King Cod out of Center Moriches has been finding some codfish.
The nice weather has made anglers anxious. It’s time to try for some early season stripers or hit your local freshwater. It’s a good time to try for some white perch. Use small lures and bait.
Still, a handful of baymen are chasing those bay scallops. There are some scallops being caught in the Peconics and from Lake Montauk. The price remains around $50 a pound. There have been hard clams available when the tide cooperates.
This Saturday, March 11, is the day for the Sag Harbor Fire Department Fisherman’s Flea Market. It’s being held at the Sag Harbor Firehouse, located at 1357 Brick Kiln Road in Sag Harbor, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This annual event benefits the Fire Department Dive Team. I look forward to seeing you all there.
