Sag Harbor Golf Course Road Will Be Paved

Kathryn G. Menu on Jun 17, 2020

New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. announced last week that the project to pave Sag Harbor Golf Course Road is moving forward this fall.

The roadway, just off of Route 114 in East Hampton, leads to the 48.8-acre state golf course, a nine-hole golf range. The project will be funded by a $375,000 grant secured by

Mr. Thiele in the 2018 state budget for road paving work and other necessary improvements to the gold course, located in the middle of the 341-acre Barcelona Neck Natural Resources Management Area. The Sag Harbor Golf Course Road will be repaved from State Route 114 to the Sag Harbor Golf Clubhouse.

According to Mr. Thiele, a bid opening is planned for the week of July 4, with the contract expected to be awarded in early September. Work will begin on the roadway shortly thereafter.

“I have long advocated for the paving of the Sag Harbor Golf Course Road, and am thrilled that, at long last, this essential reconstruction project is finally moving forward,” Mr. Thiele said. “I thank the State Parks Department for their efforts in advancing this important project to improve the Sag Harbor Golf Course Road surface and the safety of all those who travel it, and I am excited to see it come to fruition.”

The Sag Harbor Golf Course Road is owned by the state and is the responsibility of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation.

Even South Fork residents who have issues with U.S. Representative Nick LaLota’s positions on some important issues should give credit where it’s due: In one respect at least, the Republican 1st District congressman has stuck to his guns on an issue that deserves bipartisan attention — the unfair cap on state and local tax deductions on federal tax returns. SALT, in short, has been a talking point for LaLota since he emerged as the GOP’s successor to Lee Zeldin for the House seat, even as much of his other rhetoric has toed the line drawn by Republican leaders in Washington, ... by Editorial Board

The Toll on Veterans

This Memorial Day, as we honor those who sacrificed all for the country, it’s also important to take stock of how well the nation cares for our living veterans. Cuts already made to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and further cuts that the Trump administration has floated, make clear that we are not giving our all, and perhaps not enough. In fact, the federal government under Donald Trump is running fast in the wrong direction. Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency saw to it that 2,400 probationary VA staff members were laid off, and the Trump administration set ... by Editorial Board
