This column usually begins with a summary of the week’s weather. I guess the topic is still Hurricane Irene this week. Many folks still don't have power, but we were still very fortunate. We had wind and rain but it could have been so much worse! Many of us had to take our boats out of the water and then put them back.
It will be interesting to see how the fishing will hold up. I have been out and can say that the porgies and weakfish are still biting. They were biting before the storm also. Bigger porgies are at Buoy 16 mixed with the weakfish. Fluke continue to be an away affair.
Most boats are traveling to Gardiner's or trying in the ocean. Bigger fish are in the ocean. Large bluefish were at Plum Gut mixed with bass mostly on the outgoing tide. This blow may jump start the fall run.
Snappers are growing and taking metal bait around the creeks and docks. Ocean beaches have been quiet for the surfcasters. Remember that clamming is closed until September 5, which means many will be without clams for the Labor Day weekend. Crab reports in saltwater have been good.
