Steps in Motion

I read with interest your recent editorial, “Three Priorities” [May 29], and agree that traffic and parking remain complex, intertwined challenges in Sag Harbor.

That said, I believe the piece gave the impression that some promising ideas are simply floating out there, rather than reflecting the tangible steps already being taken by the village in partnership with community stakeholders.

Take Jesse Matsuoka’s shuttle concept, for example. Jesse has brought this forward with real passion, and the Village Board, especially the mayor and I, have had extensive conversations with him about how best to support it. We are optimistic about what this initiative could mean for easing summer congestion and improving access around the village.

We’ve identified potential shuttle drop-off zones near the windmill and the Civil War monument, areas that could also serve as designated Uber and Lyft pick-up spots. Yes, these would replace a few parking spaces, but it’s a strategic trade-off aimed at improving overall flow and accessibility.

Additionally, the village is in final contract negotiations with the Sag Harbor School District to use their Jermaine Avenue and Montauk Avenue parking lots for the exclusive use of employees of village businesses during the months of July and August. This will add 48 new parking spaces, about half the capacity of the gas ball lot.

I’ve worked closely with the mayor on this initiative since late February, and we publicly acknowledged the school district’s cooperation and generosity during the March Board of Trustees meeting.

These are not speculative ideas or theoretical fixes — they’re practical steps in motion, grounded in collaboration and commitment. We are thinking creatively, working locally and acting now.

I appreciate this opportunity to clarify and underscore that the village is not just aware of the challenges — we’re actively working to address them.
