Superior Choice

As a resident of North Haven for over six years, the mayoral debate was a great opportunity for me to learn about the candidates. It has been said that the way a politician campaigns is a prelude to how that politician will govern, and I learned about the character of our candidates.

One thing this debate made clear is how grateful we should be for the hard work of present Mayor Jeffrey Sander, the North Haven trustees, and the Village Hall administrators. These individuals, mostly volunteers, take on challenging roles that require hard work, strong communication skills, an understanding of the importance of adhering to and setting precedent, following code precisely, and maintaining the ability to focus on both the big picture and the minute details while still finding compromise or consensus.

Our leaders are managing issues where there are no perfect, black-and-white answers on topics like erosion, ticks and cellphone reception, while at the same time strengthening our community and doing it on budget.

It is important that we pass the baton to the most qualified candidate for the job as mayor, and I believe that is Terie Diat.

I firmly believe that Terie Diat would be the kind of proactive and smart mayor that this community expects and needs. This impression from the debate is consistent with what I have observed as I have watched Terie participate at the many Village Board meetings I have attended. At all times, I have observed Terie Diat to be professional, actively engaged, prepared and knowledgeable about the topics before the board. She does her homework, learns from experts, and asks thoughtful, forward-thinking questions.

Ms. Diat makes a point to listen to residents’ concerns. In fact, the community survey she managed informed the priorities of the mayor and the trustees enabling our local government to consider and reevaluate new and old projects and initiatives.

Ms. Diat also has experience in building and following a budget for global brands and North Haven Manor, and I believe she has lowered all of our North Haven taxes this year. The monthly newsletter she established, writes and publishes demonstrates her commitment to active engagement, well-researched knowledge, and the belief that our community should have a view into and a voice in the future of our community. She really cares about North Haven as well as the people who live here.

The voters of North Haven have a clear and superior choice for their next mayor: Terie Diat. Together, let’s pass the baton to Ms. Diat and keep North Haven uniquely special from the rest of the Hamptons.
