I was under the impression that the candidates for mayor of North Haven were going to keep the campaign positive and upbeat, focusing on their accomplishments and qualifications. There is, unfortunately, a major turn.
My opponent, Terie Diat, has embarked on a multimedia smear campaign, accusing myself, as well as Dianne Skilbred (our current deputy mayor, with 26 years of unblemished service to North Haven), of simply preposterous “integrity” issues. All because we were a couple of days late in filing a contribution disclosure form (which was all zeros).
Point is, no one cared. Neither New York State nor the Suffolk County Board of Elections had any interest in her complaint, filed after she “FOILed” our form on the due date. Dismissed without merit. Our village clerk accepted our submission without issue.
It simply didn’t matter to anyone. Except the good Trustee Diat.
My hunch is that she would like to have had me disqualified — which would have denied the voters of North Haven a choice, a much more serious integrity issue. Dirty politics.
I am running with Dianne on the basis of our accomplishments, our stellar reputations, our dedication to the people of the village, and our insistence on staying on the high road. We greatly appreciate your vote and your trust in us on June 21.
Chris Fiore
