Temporary Pause

I am writing to address a matter of great importance to our community: the ongoing conversation surrounding affordable housing and the potential impact of floating zone legislation.

First and foremost, I want to emphasize my unwavering commitment to addressing the pressing need for affordable housing in Sag Harbor. It is a challenge that demands our attention and collaborative efforts.

However, in the spirit of responsible governance and strategic planning, I am urging a temporary pause on any floating zone legislation until the Sag Harbor Smart Growth Comprehensive Plan is fully developed and adopted.

The Sag Harbor Smart Growth Comprehensive Plan, about to get underway, thanks to the recent $176,400 grant award from New York State, holds the promise of providing a comprehensive and well-thought-out framework for the future development of our village. It is essential that we allow this plan to reach completion before implementing any significant zoning changes, such as floating zones, which could have far-reaching consequences for our community.

By taking this approach, we ensure that any decisions made regarding zoning align with the overarching goals and vision outlined in the Comprehensive Plan. This will not only help us address the immediate need for affordable housing but also will contribute to the long-term sustainability and vibrancy of Sag Harbor.

Additionally, a pause on floating zone legislation allows for increased public engagement and input into the decision-making process. The Smart Growth Comprehensive Plan should be a reflection of the collective aspirations of our community, and giving residents the opportunity to actively participate in shaping our future is crucial.

I understand the urgency of the affordable housing issue, and I share the concerns of many in our community. However, a thoughtful and strategic approach is essential to ensure that the solutions we implement are sustainable and in line with our community’s values.

I appreciate the dedication of our mayor and my fellow village trustees and community members in addressing these challenges. Let us continue working together to create a future for Sag Harbor that is both inclusive and sustainable.
