Thomas J. Meers, formerly of Sag Harbor, died peacefully with his family surrounding him on March 12 in Clermont, Florida. He was 83.

He was born in Rockaway Beach on August 14, 1941, to John T. and Beatrice (Bridget) Meers.

He grew up with his three sisters in Oceanside, and graduated from Oceanside High School. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force, and pursued his love of aviation throughout his career, working at both East Hampton and Mattituck airports, as well as at Northrop Grumman supporting the production of the F-14 Tomcat and E-2C Hawkeye.

He and his wife of 58 years raised a family and lived in Sag Harbor for over 40 years, later moving to Vassalboro, Maine, after retirement to be closer to their grandchildren. In 2021, they moved south to Groveland, Florida.

He was dedicated to his family and the Catholic Church, working tirelessly throughout his life, always putting others before himself. His strong sense of integrity and quiet demeanor was often noted by others. He volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul in Sag Harbor and the Sacred Heart Soup Kitchen in Waterville, Maine.

He enjoyed vegetable gardening, watching Formula 1 racing, working on engines and most of all spending time with his family. His smile and sense of humor will be deeply missed by those he touched.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred (Millie); his children, Carleen Meers, Christine Nadeau, and Suzanne Southworth; his grandchildren, Celina Nadeau, Kassandra Nadeau, Alexandra Southworth and Ryan Southworth; and his dear friend (cousin), Jimmy Meere; as well as numerous extended family members.

A funeral Mass will be held on April 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s RC Church in Sag Harbor.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to CurePSP Quality of Life Respite Grant at secure2.convio.net/cpsp/site/Donation2?df_id=3780&mfc_pref=T&3780.donation=form1.

Wall Magic

It’s often easy to slip up and wish someone a “Happy Memorial Day” — it is, after all, the first long weekend of warm weather and a time for family and friends to get together. Beyond the time off, though, is the solemn reason for the holiday: As the Veterans of Foreign Wars put it just a few days ago, “Memorial Day is, at its core, a day of remembrance for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.” It’s a celebration, but one that should be filled with gratitude. This year on the South Fork, there ... by Editorial Board

Promises Kept

Some things are very much worth waiting for. It took a little longer than expected — though the scale of the project and the volatility of the times suggest that the earliest timetables were wildly optimistic — but the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Emergency Department opened in East Hampton last week, just in time for the holiday weekend, typically a moment when emergency care becomes in even greater demand as the population swells and people get more active with warmer weather. The original plan was to have the facility open by late 2023. But the lingering impact of the pandemic ... by Editorial Board
