Utter Hubris

Mayor Jim Larocca’s recent letter [“Utter Hypocrisy,” Letters, October 27] exhibits a complete lack of understanding of the issues of low-income housing and commercial development in Sag Harbor.

I do not know anyone who is not acutely aware of the housing problem on the East End and its impact on individuals and businesses. I know many people who are opposed to the Conifer-Potter project for truly relevant reasons. (High density in a congested high-traffic area, lack of sewage capacity, lack of parking, flooding risk — to name a few of them.)

Ascribing indifference to the need for low-income housing to opposition to the project is a shaming attempt that should not be part of this discussion.

Mayor Larocca appears to be able to overlook all the reasons why the project is ill-advised to achieve his and the developer’s goals. Apparently, low-income housing in an inappropriate location is acceptable to him. The end justifies the means?

The village would be better served by Mayor Larocca working with the other municipalities to find solutions to low-income housing and transportation on the East End. Solutions that will address Sag Harbor’s needs as a part of addressing the larger need.

The hypocrisy and cynicism are the mayor’s presumption to lecture his constituents.
