I just learned that Canio’s will need a new home after its lease is up in September 2024 [“Canio’s Books, Long a Sag Harbor Cultural Icon, Faces Uncertain Future as Lease Is Not Renewed,” 27east.com, March 20].
Canio’s is an essential and priceless member of the Sag Harbor community. My family and I have been customers since its early days. I cannot imagine a day without Canio’s in Sag Harbor.
The owners know their customers so well that they are able to recommend books they will enjoy. It’s an environment for stimulating conversation with the owners and other customers. It’s become a vital hub of the community.
In addition to best-sellers, the bookstore has many other books that other places do not carry and cover every possible topic you can think of. It’s a wonderful place to browse and find unexpected treasures. They will order books with a personal touch that online retailers cannot provide.
We must find a new Sag Harbor location for Canio’s so that it can remain a vital part of the village.
