On Saturday, May 28, the village business district of Sag Harbor was unbelievable with traffic on this Memorial Day weekend.
While turning right next to the post office, off Long Island Avenue, a stream of cars were coming from Meadow Street, heading for Long Island Avenue, with a one-way sign right in front of them. As I drove to Meadow Street, the road was blocked by two huge trucks, one sanitation truck and one delivery truck. Both trucks were side by side in the middle of the road.
Here I was, facing the back of the sanitation truck, with its back-up lights on. I could not back up because of the huge amount of traffic behind me, and ahead of me was the narrowest of space between the two trucks. I said a prayer and took a chance and managed to barely make it.
As I drove up to Main Street, I looked for a police officer or TCO — not one in sight. Where were they? What a shame to not be able to find one to direct traffic.
Hats off to the police departments in East Hampton. They are everywhere in East Hampton. What are we paying for?
