On Saturday, June 17, more than 300 runners/walkers braved the elements and participated in the second annual Beacon of Hope 5K in Montauk.
Dr. Louis Avvento, a compassionate oncologist with New York Blood and Cancer, who has been a longtime supporter of Lucia’s Angels and the Coalition, was honored at the event. Many of his patients participated in the 5K, and several touching stories were shared.
The course traversed through the historic Camp Hero State Park and finished right alongside the magnificent Montauk Lighthouse tower. Thanks to Chef Collette (former owner of the Inn Spot), each runner received a miniature lighthouse.
Christine Fagereng was the first cancer survivor to cross the finish line, receiving a Spa Day at Gurney’s Montauk.
The 5K benefits the local cancer organizations Lucia’s Angels and the Coalition for Women’s Cancers. One hundred percent of the money raised stays here, in the community.
We would like to thank Bill Becker and Joe Gaviola for spearheading the 5K, our generous sponsors, the Beacon of Hope committee, the volunteers, and all of our supporters. Thank you for helping us make a difference in the lives of women and their families in our community diagnosed with breast or gynecological cancers.
If you or anyone you know needs our help, please do not hesitate to call 631-204-9331 or email sroden@cwcshh.org.
