I first met Charlie Mott in the spring of 1967, immediately following my three years of active duty service as an Army officer during the Vietnam War. He was the head of a Wall Street firm, Baker, Weeks — small in size but highly regarded for their excellent equity research work. From him, I learned the basics of equity research, as well as how to convey my thoughts and written recommendations with minimal verbiage, a skill set initially formed during my high school days under legendary teacher John Warriner of “Warriner’s Handbook of English Grammar” fame.
Charlie also taught me how to work with people, to listen to their thoughts and suggestions — lessons which proved invaluable during my four terms as the mayor of Quogue.
So many happy memories of Charlie over almost 60 years, with perhaps the most memorable following my annual Quogue State of the Village address in 2009, when he shook my hand saying, “I am so proud of you, George.”
Rest in peace with Anne, my friend.
