A Good Plan

The Southampton Town Trustees should be commended for their plan to dredge sand from the inlets of the South Pond and Middle Pond and use it to rebuild an eroded beach [“Southampton Trustees To Rebuild Shinnecock Bay Beach Eroded by Sea Wall, But Are Uncertain of How Long It Will Last,” 27east.com, September 11]. The plan is similar to a project that the Town of Brookhaven implemented in 2017, when they dredged at the entrance of the Areskonk Creek and used the sand to fortify nearby Webby’s Beach, ensuring another generation of Webby sandcastles.

Mother Nature had been choking Areskonk Creek with sand, and the imminent closure would have transformed the creek into a pool of toxic algae, much like what Mother Nature had done to the many ponds farther east. Instead, Areskonk Creek has been teeming with life, be it the shiners, crabs, eels, snappers, butter fish, baby blowfish, fluke, flounder, peanut bunker, sea bass, striped bass, weakfish, spot fish, or perch. Even seahorses have been released from our crab traps. Most recently, in the early morning hours, my neighbor took a photo of a small octopus (they love the crabs).

In retrospect, my only advice to the Southampton Town Trustees is that they begin their dredging at low tide.
