A New Balance

On Tuesday, November 7, Southampton voters will decide our future. For many years, the Democratic Town Board majority has been overly concerned with the desires of our wealthy residents. Their focus on this demographic might reflect the huge donations that funded their campaigns.

No one can deny the economic impact of our moneyed residents on our local economy and their generous support of local institutions. However, their desire to change our town, whether to close a public road or pretend not to violate restrictions on their property, are assaults on the beauty that drew them to Southampton in the first place.

There is a vast difference between being out for the weekend and living in Southampton. For many years, the ultra-wealthy have built huge houses that dwarf their lots and have dramatically altered our neighborhoods.

The local Republican candidates offer a more balanced and common sense approach to our governance, whether the issue is Liberty Gardens or the future of Hampton Bays. Money, the life blood of politics, dominated the local Democrats and our town long enough.
