A Nodding Head

Five years, one lawsuit, a petition with thousands of signatures, a demonstration, countless public hearings, countless hours of community resources, countless letters, countless hours of government resources, and the expenditure of many tax dollars was not enough to get the Jay Schneiderman Southampton Town Board to terminate the ill-fated plan to develop the Bel-Air Cove Motel property.

After a mere two months, the new board has revisited the issue and has proposed a resolution to terminate the development plan and preserve the site as parkland. Kudos, and thanks to the four board members sponsoring the resolution. It is a good example of how a bipartisan board can work together to further the best interests of the community and the environment.

The fifth board member, Tommy John Schiavoni, did not sponsor the legislation. In fact, he has consistently nodded his head in Jay Schneiderman’s shadow for the last eight years and supported commercial development on this piece of environmentally sensitive waterfront property. Either he favors commercial development exclusively over anything else or he was afraid to disagree with the former supervisor. Either way, he won’t be getting my vote for State Assembly.

But Maria Moore, Cyndi McNamara, Bill Pell and Michael Iasilli might restore my faith.
