A Reminder

I attended the opening of the Southampton Arts Center exhibit “Independency: The American Flag at 250 Years.” I was not at all prepared for what I saw, and the emotionality of what I felt while viewing the three rooms of flags from our country’s history.

Each flag tells a story of American values, attitudes and points in our history where we stood up to defend or express what is meant by our Constitution. It was a history lesson, a civic lesson, and a lesson in morality and perseverance.

That this event was held on Memorial Day added to its meaning and emotional power. It echoed what Bruce Springsteen was talking about in Manchester a few weeks ago. It reminds us why we cannot abandon the fight in Ukraine and why we must stop the war in Gaza.

The current administration and all of Congress should attend — because some need a reminder of what we stand for. For those who remember what our Constitution means, it will inspire us to continue to fight the good fight and never give up on our ideals.
