A. Richard New died at his home in Water Mill on February 19. He was 85.
Mr. New was born to Dorothy and Arnold New on November 25, 1930, in New York City later moving to Stewart Manor and then Freeport. He ran track at Freeport High School and at 17 he joined the United States Navy. While in the navy, he enrolled in radio school, worked in communications, and did some boxing.
In 1953 he married Gloria Borkowski and the couple had three daughters. He worked for the Long Island Lighting Company, retiring from the Bridgehampton location after 40 years.
In his younger days, Mr. New bred and trained English setter dogs for field trials. Later on, he became an avid sailor. In his retirement he obtained his captain’s license and spent many days sailing the Peconic Bay. His love for the outdoors often had him tending his vegetable garden. In the winter he resided in Naples, Florida, where he sailed and played baseball with a seniors league.
Mr. New was a member of the Community Bible Church in Noyac and the Naples Alliance Church in Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gloria; a sister, Kathleen Kerr; three daughters, Karen Tureski and husband Tom, Michelle New, Diane New and partner Alec Chang; four grandchildren, Michael Tureski and wife Stacey, Dana Distefano and husband Chris, Mark Tureski and wife Eileen, Stephen Tureski and wife Kelly; and six great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held for the family and friends at the Community Bible Church in Noyac on Saturday, March 5, at 11 a.m.
