Police have arrested a Hampton Bays man a second time in as many weeks after another hourslong standoff sparked by fears that he was barricaded in a residence with a gun.
Southampton Town Police say they were called to the Springville Road house at 3:40 a.m. on Saturday, January 25, to a report that a man was acting erratically, had physically assaulted the residents of the home and had displayed what police said they were told “appeared” to be a handgun.
When police arrived, the man refused to exit the home and an officer trained in crisis negotiation was called to the scene to convince the man to surrender — which he did after some three hours of talking with police.
The man, Anyelo Barrenfaller, 41, ultimately came out of the house and submitted to arrest. He did not end up having a gun and was charged only with a one misdemeanor count of menacing in the second degree.
The incident was a repeat of an almost identical incident involving the same man back on January 11.
In that incident, police had been called to the Hampton Bays home to a report of Barenfaller acting threateningly to others living at the house and leading the occupants to believe he had a gun. A standoff ensued, and after three hours of work by the Town Police crisis negotiator, Barenfaller exited the house and was found to not have actually have a gun. He was charged with a slightly less serious misdemeanor, menacing in the third degree, held overnight by police for arraignment in Southampton Town Justice Court and released with an order to appear in court at a later date.
Barenfaller was arrested again by Southampton Town Police on January 13 after he refused to comply with orders from a police officer at a Hampton Bays bar that had asked for him to be removed from the premises. In that instance, he was charged with three misdemeanors: resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and possession of a controlled substance.
He was due to be arraigned on the latest charges against him on Wednesday morning, January 29.
