A Showman

I was amused to read last week’s Letters to the Editor by Bill Jones [“End the Bias”], Thomas Jones [“Abject Failure”], Ed Surgan [“Sky Isn’t Falling”], and John Porta [“Bleak Alternative]. If you believe their words and statistics then you would have to believe that Joe Biden was the worst president we’ve ever had (a distinction actually given to former President Donald Trump), not to mention the most corrupt.

It’s quite laughable, but it’s the extremes to which people who need to justify Trump’s candidacy must go. They must trash, distort and exaggerate his opponent’s policies and behavior in order to deflect any attention from what Trump stands for.

And what does Trump actually stand for? Judging from the testosterone-fueled performances at the Republican National Convention leading up to his acceptance speech, it would be hard to figure out.

One thing is for sure: He stands for extremes. And when he’s not touting some extremist rhetoric, he is lying, making jokes, or prancing and dancing around the stage making up clever little nicknames for people in the opposing party.

He’s a showman, after all, with no serious knowledge or interest in foreign policy, social policy or how to unite a country. It seems he chose J.D. Vance as his running mate because he’d be a good golfing partner (who will, of course, let him win, as they all do), as it surely had nothing to do with Vance’s ability to be the vice president.

So Trump supporters will continue to recite their exaggerated and hysterical rhetoric, because that, like Trump, is the best they can do. If you’re looking for serious information about policy, domestic and international, it’s best to pay attention to the Democrats.
