Usually, when I quote reader Ed Surgan in one of my missives, it is a prelude to a rant on how misguided I think his position on a given topic is. But not today.
In his most recent Letter to the Editor [“Badly Served,” Letters, January 14], Mr. Surgan writes, “I can no longer condone or excuse the deep defects in Donald Trump. His behavior since the election has descended into a darkness that has done great harm to his supporters, party and country.”
It took courage for Mr. Surgan to write those words. It is not easy to admit that a person you have admired for so long is no longer worthy of your support.
President Trump has famously boasted that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and his followers would still support him. Until now, that has not been an idle boast.
But perhaps things are changing.

Every year, I say I am going to do this. Finally, I’m going to say it before the madness begins. Christmas does not end on Christmas. It begins on Christmas. The period before is one of preparation, called Advent. It’s...
We are very fortunate in Southampton Village to have many private organizations that support our community. It is unfortunate, then, that the village sometimes lags behind them, failing both the organizations and residents when it comes to partnering with them....
This week’s Southampton Press comments were spot on, publishing two letters concerning our environment. One of the opinions addressed the sacrifices to our well-being that are made when overuse of water and chemicals to maintain a beautiful lawn overshadows the...

It has been one year since the election of Donald Trump to a second term of the presidency. Within my limit of 450 words, I have listed below an abbreviated review of what is not normal for an American president,...
I read with deep attention to detail the almost full-page story on the lack of parking during the busy summer months in Westhampton Beach [“Westhampton Beach Village Board Exploring Paid Parking Options,” 27east.com, November 10]. I did note, happily, that...
To solve a problem, the critical step is defining it. What are the root causes of our immigration crisis? 1) Lack of economic opportunity, especially in Central and South America and Mexico, but all over the world, in reality. 2)...
Southampton Village has its own Donald Trump and Pam Bondi: Mayor Bill Manger and Village Attorney Eileen Powers. Manger, an aspiring Trump (and a former employee), and Powers, an aspiring Bondi, both relying on the same familiar trio of secrecy,...
