Accident Between Garbage Truck and School Bus Closes Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays

Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays was closed to traffic Thursday morning following an accident between a garbage truck and a school bus.

Southampton Town Police reported that the accident occurred about 6:55 a.m. at the intersection of Ponquogue Avenue and Bay Avenue. The accident involved a Winters Brothers garbage truck and a Montauk school bus.

An adult occupant of the school bus and the bus driver were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries, police said. There were no children on the bus at the time of the accident, police said.

A hazmat team was called in to clear a large amount of fluid in the road, police said.

Hampton Bays Ambulance, the Hampton Bays Fire Department and the State Police all responded to the scene, police said.

The road was closed while responders cleared the scene.
