Longtime Southampton resident Alex Tomczyk died at Southampton Hospital on August 13, after a long battle with cancer. He was 84.
Born in Krakow, Poland, in 1924, he was taken prisoner by German forces and spent years on a German work farm. He managed to escape and joined forces with the U.S. Army and the Army’s K-9 corps of trained police dogs. In 1948 he emigrated to the United States, becoming a citizen in 1956.
Employed by the Bulova Watch Company in Sag Harbor, he worked as a commercial fisherman after its closing and, in his later years, ran a successful upholstering business.
Survivors said he enjoyed spending time with his pug, Oscar.
Mr. Tomczyk is survived by a daughter, Tina and her husband Mustapha Kahia of Southampton. His wife, Lucy Zdunko Tomczyk, predeceased him.
A funeral was held on August 18 at Our Lady of Poland Church in Southampton; interment followed at Sacred Hearts Cemetery in Southampton.
