Alexander C. Nagle, formerly of Westhampton Beach and Remsenburg, died on Monday, August 12, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He was 92.
Mr. Nagle was born on October 28, 1920, in New York City, the eldest son of Alexander C. and Marguerite (Greer) Nagle. He met his future wife, Mary A Childs, at a Westhampton Country Club dance in 1936. After graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1939, he attended Dartmouth College as a member of the class of 1943, leaving shortly after Pearl Harbor to become a Naval aviator. He was awarded his Navy Wings at Naval Air Station Pensacola in January 1943 and married his wife later that same month. Throughout the war, he served in Boston and Maine, flying countless convoy escorts and anti-submarine patrols between Boston and Nova Scotia, survivors said.
After serving with the U.S. Navy, Mr. Nagle joined the Alliance Oil Company in 1945. In 1951 he became president of the company, a position he never officially left. In addition, he founded Laboratory Service in New Jersey, a petrochemical survey and inspection company. With Alliance Oil, Mr. Nagle traveled extensively in the Far East and Europe.
An avid and lifelong sailor, Mr. Nagle was a two-time Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association Junior Champion. He served as commodore of the Westhampton Yacht Squadron, he was treasurer of the Friends of the Westhampton Library, he was a longtime member of the Westhampton Country Club and he also served 10 years as trustee of the Village of Westhampton Beach. He built a home in Westhampton in 1967, later moving to Remsenburg, where he spent more than 25 years before moving to Chapel Hill.
Mr. Nagle is survived by two daughters, Judith (Nagle) Hallock and Laura (Nagle) Wilson; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many close friends. He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Mary A (Childs) Nagle, and a son, Alexander C. Nagle III.
The family will receive friends at the Follett and Werner Funeral Home, 60 Mill Road in Westhampton Beach, on Tuesday, August 27, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be celebrated at the Westhampton Presbyterian Church, on Meeting House Road on Quiogue, on Wednesday, August 28, at 11 a.m., with interment following at Westhampton Cemetery.
