Alice Elizabeth Looney Of Westhampton Dies December 3

author on Dec 5, 2016

Alice Elizabeth Looney of Westhampton died at home on December 3, 2016, surrounded by family and friends. She was 57.

Mrs. Looney was born on April 18, 1959, and raised in Trenton, New Jersey. She attended Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart and Princeton Day School, before matriculating at the University of Delaware, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a concentration in social work.

She met John “Patrick” Looney at the University of Delaware, and they were married on July 7, 1984. She was the first girl Patrick met at the University of Delaware. They settled outside of Washington, D.C., and raised their two children, Elizabeth and Patrick “Sid” Looney, there, before moving to Westhampton in 2005.

Mrs. Looney was the membership liaison at the Westhampton Country Club, a job that suited her perfectly. She loved living in Westhampton and being part of the community and found friends everywhere she went.

In April 2012, she was diagnosed with appendiceal cancer and began treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. Survivors said she continued to personify beauty, grace, and dignity in all that she did in the years preceding her death. She worked, traveled, went to yoga classes, and was grateful to see her children grow into adulthood. Through it all, she remained strong and courageous.

In the final weeks of her life, she returned home from the hospital and was cared for by her friends and family and by East End Hospice.

She is survived by her husband, John “Patrick” Looney of Westhampton; two children, Elizabeth Looney of Manhattan and Patrick “Sid” Looney of Westhampton; her parents, Eleanor and William Graff of New Jersey; and a brother, William Graff of New Jersey.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Church in Westhampton Beach on Saturday, December 10, at 11 a.m. A memorial service and interment of ashes will be held on January 14 at Christ Church in Greenville, Delaware, where she and her husband were married.

Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, eeh.org; or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, mskcc.org.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Follett & Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach.

Southampton Scored $19 Million Grant for Riverside Sewers

Southampton Town has been awarded a $19 million grant to help fund the construction of a sewer system and sewage treatment plant for Riverside — the cornerstone of the town’s decade-long drive for a sweeping revitalization of the blighted hamlet. The town recently won a lawsuit brought by Riverhead Town seeking to stop the Riverside sewer system, which will be able to treat the daily sewage from more than 700 new residences and hundreds of thousands of square feet of new commercial businesses. The first phase of the design and planing for the sewer system is complete and the town ... by Michael Wright

Setting aside politics for a moment, the federal government shutdown, now in its fifth week, is having significant consequences. Expect Delays

Anyone who commutes east and west on the South Fork daily, or who needs goods or services that come by truck — so, really, everyone — endured several days of stress. New York State and Suffolk County officials were able to find a higher gear than normal to repair Sunrise Highway at the Shinneock Canal, which limited the pain, and for that they are to be commended. By now, everyone is aware: Heavy rains last week caused erosion along the bridge abutments on the northeast side of the canal. Two westbound lanes of the highway were closed for days, with ... by Editorial Board
