Alice May Kivlan King, Formerly Of Southampton, Dies October 12

Alice May Kivlan King died, with family by her side, on October 12, 2019, at the Benchmark at Nashua Crossings, an assisted living home in Nashua, New Hampshire. She was 90.

Born on November 1, 1928, to Harriet Lee and Henry Kivlan in Boston, Massachusetts, where she graduated from high school, she attended James Madison University in Virginia, graduating in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in home economics. Her first teaching position was at Southampton High School, teaching home economics to many students, including a class of young male students, which was unheard of at the time.

She and her late husband, Everett Lane King, were married on August 2, 1952, had two children, and enjoyed more than 50 years of marriage. She finished her teaching career at East Hampton High School, after 35 years making lifelong relationships with teachers, administrators, and students. During her teaching career, she earned several honors, including the New York State Teacher of the Year, and also served on the New York State curriculum writing team for home and careers.

After retirement, Mrs. King was instrumental in the establishment of the Fountain of Youth Day Care (now known as Southampton Day Care Center), including fundraising to move a building to house the program to its current location.

After selling her home in Southampton, she divided her time between her South Carolina and New Hampshire homes. She enjoyed traveling, visiting many places during her lifetime, gardening, enjoying especially the spring flowering bulbs she planted at all her homes, and watching the birds everywhere she went.

She is survived by a daughter, Deborah Fox; her son, Donald (Kerin Guidera) King; and stepson, Lars (Peggy) King; grandchildren, Martine (Bob) Adams, Gustave (Jody) Lockerman, Jennifer (Jared) Sadeck, Davis King, Rory King, Kivlan King, Lars King, Ian King; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Southampton on November 23 at 10:30 a.m., with a private interment later that day.
